The Prinsengracht canal has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site by the United Nations in 2010 by these criteria:

  • I (“it is a masterpiece of human genius”)
  • II (“puts a significant interaction of human values on display”)
  • III (“it is an excellent example of a type of building, architectural or technological composition and landscape that significant steps in human history represents “).

In 2013, Amsterdam celebrates the four hundred year history of the canals with a series of events.
